What Nerve Pain Actually Feels Like (And Why It’s Easy to Misread)

Most people expect pain to feel like pain — a dull ache, a sharp sting, something that’s clearly coming from a specific spot. Nerve pain doesn’t always follow those rules. It can show up as tingling in your fingers, a burning sensation down your leg, or a strange numbness that comes and goes.

Because it often doesn’t feel like “normal” pain, nerve pain can be easy to dismiss, misattribute, or simply wait out for longer than you should.

Nerve Pain Has a Distinct Character

Pain that originates from a compressed or irritated nerve tends to travel. Instead of staying in one place, it radiates along the path the nerve follows, sometimes far from where the actual problem is.

A nerve issue in your lower back, for example, might produce symptoms all the way down into your calf or foot. This is part of why it gets misread; people treat the foot and never address the source.

Common Descriptions Worth Knowing

Patients often describe nerve-related symptoms as burning, electric, shooting, or a pins-and-needles sensation similar to a limb “falling asleep.”

Weakness in a limb or a feeling that your grip strength has changed can also point to nerve involvement. These sensations are your nervous system signaling that something is interfering with the way it communicates.

Why It Gets Mistaken for Something Else

Nerve pain is frequently confused with muscle soreness, circulation issues, or general fatigue, especially when the symptoms are intermittent.

For example, someone experiencing sciatic nerve irritation (that’s the large nerve running from the lower back through the leg) might assume they’ve strained a hamstring. Someone with cervical nerve compression (pressure on nerves in the neck) might chalk it up to poor sleep or tension headaches.

When to Take It Seriously

Occasional tingling after holding a position too long is usually nothing to worry about. But if you’re noticing symptoms that recur regularly, affect both sides of your body, or come with noticeable weakness, we recommend getting a proper assessment rather than ignoring it.

Nerve symptoms respond well to care when caught early. If something in your body has been sending you signals you haven’t quite been able to explain, Structural Chiropractic would be glad to help you make sense of them.

What Your Posture Looks Like After a Year of Working From Home

What Your Posture Looks Like After a Year of Working From Home

If you’ve been working from home for a while, there’s a good chance your body has quietly been keeping score. The kitchen table that became a desk. The couch that turned into a second office.

The hours spent hunched over a laptop with no monitor, no proper chair, and no reason to get up and walk to a meeting. It felt like a temporary situation, but for many people it became the new normal. And posture pays the price.

The Slow Creep of Poor Alignment

One of the tricky things about posture changes is that they happen gradually. Your body doesn’t send an alarm when your head starts drifting forward or your shoulders begin rounding inward. Instead, it adapts.

Muscles that should be working start switching off. Muscles that should be resting get chronically tight. Over months and years, what started as a slightly awkward workspace setup can become a deeply ingrained postural pattern that feels completely normal (even when it isn’t).

Forward Head Posture: The Work-From-Home Signature

One of the most common posture changes seen in remote workers is forward head posture, where the head sits ahead of the shoulders rather than stacked above them.

For every inch your head moves forward, the effective weight it places on your neck and upper spine increases significantly. This puts sustained pressure on the muscles, joints, and discs of the cervical spine (the neck region), which can contribute to neck stiffness, upper back tension, and headaches that seem to come out of nowhere.

What Rounded Shoulders Are Doing Behind the Scenes

Sitting at a low surface with a small screen naturally pulls the shoulders forward and inward. Over time, the muscles across the chest can shorten and tighten while the muscles between the shoulder blades become overstretched and weak.

This imbalance affects both how you look and how your whole upper body moves. Breathing can become slightly shallower. Shoulder mobility can decrease. And the strain can travel further down the spine than most people expect.

Your Lower Back Has Been Trying to Tell You Something

Prolonged sitting — especially in unsupported positions — reduces the natural curve of the lower back (the lumbar curve). When this curve flattens, the load on the spinal discs shifts in ways they weren’t designed to handle for hours at a stretch.
Many people notice this as a dull ache that builds through the afternoon, or stiffness that makes standing up feel like a project.

It’s Not Too Late to Improve Things

The good news is that the body responds well to consistent, targeted attention. Small changes can reduce the daily strain. Try these for a simple start:

Raise your screen

Support your lower back

Take regular standing breaks

But if postural habits have been building for months or years, those deeper compensations often need more than an ergonomic fix. A chiropractic assessment can identify where your alignment has shifted and help restore the function your body has quietly been working around.

If your work-from-home setup has taken a toll, Structural Chiropractic is here to help. Book an appointment and find out what’s actually going on, and what you can do about it.

The Surprising Connection Between Hip Alignment and Knee Pain

Knee pain is one of the most common complaints people bring to healthcare providers, and one that is often misunderstood. It’s easy to assume that if your knee hurts, the problem must be in your knee.

But the body doesn’t work in isolated parts. It works as a connected system, and one of the most frequent sources of knee trouble is actually located further up the chain: your hips.

How the Hips and Knees Are Connected

The knee is what’s known as a hinge joint. It’s designed primarily to flex and extend, not to rotate or shift side to side. When it’s asked to do those things repeatedly, wear and strain accumulate.

What controls whether the knee stays in good alignment? Largely, the hip. The muscles around the hip, including the glutes, hip flexors, and the muscles along the outer thigh, play a major role in guiding how the knee tracks during movement. When those muscles are weak or imbalanced, the knee compensates, often in ways that cause pain over time.

The Role of Hip Weakness

Weak glutes (the large muscles of the buttocks) are particularly common in people who sit for long periods. When the glutes aren’t doing their job during walking, climbing stairs, or squatting, other structures fill the gap.

The knee often ends up rotating inward slightly, which changes the angle of the kneecap and increases stress on the joint. This pattern is behind many cases of what’s commonly called “runner’s knee”, even in people who don’t run.

Pelvic Tilt and Its Downstream Effects

The pelvis sits at the top of the leg and acts like a foundation for everything below it. When the pelvis tilts forward or to one side — due to tight hip flexors, muscle imbalances, or spinal misalignment — the angle of the leg changes. That altered angle puts uneven load through the knee with every step.

People often notice this as pain on one side only, or pain that worsens going downhill or after prolonged standing.

Why Treating Only the Knee Often Misses the Point

If the root cause of knee pain is poor hip function or pelvic misalignment, addressing the knee in isolation will only go so far. Strengthening or stretching the knee itself won’t correct what’s driving the problem from above.

This is why a thorough assessment looks at the whole kinetic chain including the way force travels from the foot, through the ankle, up through the knee and hip, and into the spine.

A Different Place to Start

If you’ve had ongoing knee discomfort that hasn’t fully responded to rest or local treatment, it may be worth having your hip alignment and pelvic mechanics evaluated.

At Structural Chiropractic, we take a whole-body approach to understanding where pain is coming from, not just where it shows up.

Whether you’ve been injured in a car crash, a slip-and-fall, or a work-related incident, the effects often extend beyond immediate pain. At Structural Chiropractic in Oakland, Dr. Peter Rehl provides gentle, full-body chiropractic care designed to address the root cause of injury and help restore normal function so you don’t have to wait to start feeling better.

Gentle, Full-Body Care After an Accident

After an injury, the body often responds by tightening muscles, locking down joints, and increasing inflammation to protect damaged areas. While this response is natural, it can slow healing and contribute to ongoing discomfort if left unaddressed.

Dr. Rehl uses a structural, full-body approach that focuses on improving joint motion and calming the nervous system without forceful techniques. Collectively, it is called Structural Corrective method. The care provided often includes instrument-assisted methods such as Impulse IQ and Activator Methods, which deliver precise, low-force adjustments without twisting or cracking. When appropriate, Cold LASER therapy is added to help reduce pain and inflammation and support tissue healing.

“Healing starts when we remove the barriers your body has created to protect because of injury. Our job is to restore motion gently so your body can do what it does best: repair and recover.” — Dr. Rehl

If you’re unsure where to begin, you’re welcome to request a free consultation up to 10-minutes to ask questions and determine whether this approach is the right fit for you.

The Care You Need, Now

Injuries affect more than just the area that hurts. Speed, vehicle weight, direction of impact, or the mechanics of a fall all influence how the body absorbs trauma. Joints may lose motion. Muscles may guard excessively. Inflammation can rise throughout the body (and sometimes in places far from the initial injury site).

Left untreated, these changes can contribute to ongoing pain, reduced mobility, and even accelerated joint degeneration. The focus at our practice is on identifying what was injured and what is compensating as a result. Care is then tailored to help stop this progression and restore healthy, functional movement.

If a concussion is suspected, Dr. Rehl performs screening using an eye-movement test and co-manages care with other providers when needed. The goal is simple: relieve pain and help your body work the way it should.

What Personal Injury Chiropractic Can Help With

Personal injury chiropractic care addresses more than just pain at the injury site. It may also help with secondary symptoms that commonly appear after accidents, falls, or work injuries, including:

Neck and back pain, including whiplash

Headaches, dizziness, or balance issues

Shoulder, hip, knee, or wrist pain

Tingling, numbness, or weakness

Limited range of motion and stiffness

Sleep disturbances and low energy

Brain fog and difficulty focusing

Postural strain from prolonged sitting or compensation

By addressing the full-body impact of an injury, chiropractic care supports more complete and efficient healing.

What to Expect From Your Visit

Your care begins with a thorough consultation and examination. Dr. Rehl takes time to understand how the injury occurred, your current symptoms, and your health history. You’ll then receive a clear explanation of findings and a personalized care plan.

Treatment may include adjustments to the spine as well as the arms and legs, depending on what’s affected. Cold laser therapy may be recommended to further support healing by reducing pain, inflammation, and encouraging tissue repair.

Same-day appointments may be available. Urgent cases are considered by phone. We also accept auto accident and workers’ compensation cases, and X-rays are ordered when necessary to ensure appropriate care.

Discover how gentle, structural chiropractic care helps restore motion, calm irritated nerves, and support natural healing after a collision.

Being involved in a car accident can be overwhelming physically, emotionally, and mentally. Even crashes that seem minor at first can leave lasting effects on the body. At Structural Chiropractic in Oakland, auto accident chiropractic care focuses on gentle, structural techniques that help restore motion, calm irritated nerves, and support your body’s natural healing process.

We combine different chiropractic techniques together under our Structural Corrective method to bring to you individualized care that your body needs, removing the interference (the obstructions) to your nervous system, helping you optimize your health. This in turn allows you to live more fully and vitally in health. We seek to get to the root cause of your health issues, not just to remove pain.

How the Body Responds After a Car Accident

After a crash, the body often shifts into a protective “splinting” mode. Muscles tighten. Joints stiffen. The nervous system becomes irritated as it tries to protect injured areas. While this response is natural, it can lead to pain, reduced mobility, and lingering symptoms and bodily dysfunction if not properly addressed. You may or may not notice or feel this dysfunction to health, making it a highlighted reason to get checked.

Neck pain, back stiffness and pain, headaches, and fatigue are common after auto injuries, even if symptoms don’t appear immediately. Chiropractic care after a car accident aims to address these issues early by restoring healthy movement patterns before compensation and chronic problems develop, such as degenerated joints.

Gentle, Structural Chiropractic After an Auto Injury

Dr. Peter Rehl provides gentle, full-body chiropractic care designed specifically for post-accident recovery, the Structural Corrective method. This approach focuses on precise corrections that reduce strain on injured tissues and calm the nervous system.

“After a car accident, your body needs the correct and gentle support, not too forceful. We focus on restoring natural movement patterns so you can heal the right way from the start.” — Dr. Rehl

If you’re unsure where to begin, patients can request a free consultation up to 10-minutes to discuss your concerns and next steps.

Your First Visit: What to Expect

Your initial appointment begins with listening. Dr. Rehl takes time to understand how the accident occurred, your current symptoms, and your health history. From there, a thorough examination is performed. Motion assessments of the spine and pelvis are conducted. Muscle testing helps identify weakness or imbalance. Neurological checks ensure proper nerve function. Even subtle nerve irritation can affect your recovery.

Special attention is given to areas that are not moving well, as restricted motion often plays a key role in post-accident pain and dysfunction.

If special imaging is necessary, we will inform you of the need. We will present an explanation of your exam findings and a personalized care plan. As your body heals, care is adjusted based on your progress and response to treatment.

How Chiropractic Helps After an Auto Accident

Structural chiropractic care supports recovery by restoring motion, reducing nerve irritation, and helping the body heal efficiently. The primary condition to focus on are the joints that are not moving well, especially of the spine and pelvis, but may be other joints as well, your shoulders, knees, hips, etc. In our clinic, we call these primary conditions “obstructions”.

These obstructions cause secondary conditions: what you feel, and what you do not feel, your illness, your dysfunction. The key in our clinic is to find, detect, and correct obstructions to unlock your body’s innate ability to heal itself. We may add cold laser as well.

Chiropractic care after a car accident commonly helps with:

Neck pain and whiplash

Back pain and stiffness

Headaches and postural strain

Shoulder, hip, knee, and other extremity injuries

Numbness, tingling, weakness, or abnormal sensations

Sleep disruption and fatigue

Reduced range of motion and lingering inflammation

Concussion evaluations when needed, with reports sent to a neurologist for further review

Gentle Techniques Used in Auto Accident Care

Care is tailored to the individual. It may include a combination of gentle chiropractic techniques such as Impulse IQ (computer-assisted instrument adjustments), Activator Methods (targeted, low-force corrections), Drop Table (controlled movements to restore spinal motion), and Diversified adjusting (hands-on techniques when appropriate). Altogether, these techniques are what we use and call Structural Corrective method, getting to the root cause of your health issues.

Soft tissue work, stretching, and corrective exercises may also be included to support healing and improve long-term stability.

Cold Laser Therapy for Healing Support

For injuries involving inflammation, muscle strains, or soft tissue damage, Cold laser therapy is often recommended. This safe, non-invasive therapy uses light energy to boost mitochondrial ATP production, helping to reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and support tissue repair.

Cold laser sessions typically take about five minutes following an adjustment and can be especially helpful in more severe crashes or cases requiring ongoing care.

Insurance-Friendly and Patient-Centered Care

Structural Chiropractic welcomes auto accident and workers’ compensation cases. The office accepts Medicare, United Healthcare, HSA/FSA accounts, and major credit cards. When necessary, health care may be co-managed with other providers, including concussion screening using eye-movement testing.

Next Steps After an Auto Accident

If you’ve been hurt in a car accident, early care can support a smoother recovery. Schedule an appointment to discuss your symptoms, get clarity on what’s going on, and plan your next steps.

Stay Aligned This Thanksgiving: Simple Tips for a Comfortable Holiday

Thanksgiving brings full schedules, road trips, and long hours on your feet in the kitchen. Add heavy meals and couch time, and it’s easy to feel stiff or sore. At Structural Chiropractic, we help you keep moving well so you can enjoy the season—without the post-holiday aches.

Travel Smart (Car, Plane, Train)

Break up sitting: Aim to stand, stretch, and walk for 2-3 minutes every hour.

Support your spine: Roll up a small towel for low-back support; keep hips level and shoulders relaxed.

Pack a “micro-mobility” kit: Mini massage ball + resistance band = quick relief at rest stops and gates.

Kitchen Prep Without the Backache

Counter stance: Keep one foot on a low stool and switch sides often to reduce lumbar strain.

Hinge, don’t hunch: When lifting pans or turkeys, bend at hips and knees and keep items close to your body.

Quick reset: Every 30-45 minutes, do 5-8 gentle hip hinges and 10 shoulder rolls.

Game Day, Couch Day—Still Move

Commercial break circuit: 10 air squats, 10 calf raises, 10 wall pushups. Better yet, 10 true squats. Stand up, angle out your feet 7 degrees, feet are shoulder width apart, keep your back straight as you squat, you will bend at the hips until your upper legs are almost parallel with the floor, or to your tolerance. As you bend at the hips, the spine kept inline, you will find your torso and head leaning forward to keep your center of balance; that is natural. Squats at a moderate pace, to your tolerance.

Floor > sofa (sometimes): Sitting on the floor encourages better posture and frequent position changes.

Hydrate: Water supports joints and helps combat that heavy, sluggish feeling.

Manage “Post-Feast” Stiffness

Walk it out: At least a 10-15-minute walk after meals supports digestion and eases joint stiffness.

Gentle mobility: Cat-cow, thoracic rotations, and ankle circles help everything feel looser.

Sleep setup: A pillow between the knees (side sleepers) or under the knees (back sleepers) can reduce strain.

Don’t Forget to Visit Us!

Regular visits help keep joints moving well and your nervous system functioning at its best. Many people report fewer flare-ups, better range of motion, and easier recovery from long travel or busy cooking days when they stay consistent with care.

Book Before the Rush Begins

Life moves fast, and it’s easy for regular chiropractic visits to slip off the schedule. But your spine and nervous system never take a break—they’re working every day to keep your body balanced, mobile, and strong.

If it’s been six months or more since your last visit, now’s the perfect time to check in. To make it easy, we’re offering a FREE re-examination for returning patients. It’s a simple way to see how you’re doing and keep your health goals on track.

Your Visit, Simplified

We’ve recently refined our pricing at Structural Chiropractic to make things clearer and more straightforward for you:

Regular visit: $60

Extremity adjustments (for areas such as the legs, knees, hips, arms, jaw, ribs, or shoulders): an additional $23, as needed

You’ll always discuss your care with the doctor first, so you know exactly what’s involved before any extra work is done. This transparent approach keeps your care simple and predictable; no surprises, just clear communication and focused support.

Why Come Back Now?

Regular spinal check-ups help keep your body aligned and functioning at its best. When everything is moving properly, your nervous system can do its job more effectively, helping you move easier, rest better, and stay active doing the things you love. Even small misalignments can add up over time, so this is a great opportunity to get back into a rhythm of regular wellness visits.

A Friendly Reminder

If you’ve been away since our previous clinic location, you may notice that our new structure is designed to be both clear and patient-friendly. We’ve streamlined everything— from scheduling and communication to pricing—so you can focus on what matters most: feeling your best.
